Flora

image   There is no comprehensive census of the vegetable species living in the Parco regionale del Delta del Po. However, the data collected during the years by different Authors about specific areas attest to the presence of at least 970 species, and it is possible to estimate the specific diversity of the area at about 1.000 - 1.100 species.

Such richness is due to the great environmental diversity of Parco del Delta del Po: coastal beaches and dunes, lagoons and brackish areas, marshes and fresh water wetlands, not to mention the range of hygrophilous, mesophilous, and xerophilous woods.

The Park is peopled by extremely specialised plants linked either to the beaches and dunes (psammophilous plants) or to the wetlands (hydrophytes) and their banks (helophytes); wetlands include lagoons and brackish lagoons (halophilic plants), marshes and fresh water wetlands.

In addition to these, there are several adaptable plants growing along the edges of cultivated fields, as well as several species typical of forest environments - trees, shrubs, and herbs of the undergrowth and of the clearings - living in the hygrophilous, mesophilous, and xerophilous woods.
