The so-called maròta o marutìna is a particular flat-bottomed hatch-boat, with the whole upper surface covered and with holes and slits on the bottom and on the sides. The size of these boats was determined by their function: large boats (maròte) were used for long distance fish transport, while smaller ones (marutìne) were used mainly to cover shorter distances, from fishing stations to Manifattura dei Marinati. These floating hatcheries were made by Calafati, master shipwrights specialised in boat construction. |
