House of Memory museum - Documentation Centre of the Mechanical Drainage
At the end of the 19th century over 12.00 hectares of the brackish water of the valley, entirely below the sea level, were drained and then turned into crop field thanks to the project of the Consorzio di Bonifica del 2° Circondario, to a powerful pumping plant and a vast network of channels. The Volta, Gallare and Tassoni valleys were thus drained thanks to the creation of a plant built in Marozzo di Lagosanto. This pumping plant powered by steam engines, through large wheels which lift and unload all the waters from the valleys into the Po di Volano. Over time, the plant has changed more than once, both for technological upgrading and to face the natural and progressive blockage of the land due to the very drainage process. After 115 years of uninterrupted activity since 1986, the 19th-century plant has been replaced by a new state-of-the-art pumping station, designed by the technicians of the Consorzio di Bonifica 2° circondario. A few decades were enough to transform the habits and activities of a community, and this is why the House of Memory is so important. This museum gathers one hundred years of the history of the drainage of the Ferrara territory, with tales, and everyday objects which bring visitors back to the days of the drainage. The profound relationship between history and mechanics can be fascinating to the visitors, who can here feel the profound respect and become part of this territory so rich in history and so happily productive nowadays.

Through the didactic exposition set in the herbarium, visitors can discover some of the precious medical herbs which can be found in the Lagosanto area still today.
In the past, people walked through the fields, along the banks, into the woodlands, in search of spontaneous herbs; the leaves and roots were an important source of nutrients and some of these were believed to have magic powers. The visit explains how every flower, every spontaneous plant has an origin and a story with specific medical and nutritive properties and, some times, very peculiar uses.

A bike itinerary bordering the Po di Volano, the ancient river used as communication way and base of an important salt trade. Salt was a very valuable mineral in the past, fundamental in food processing and preservation; indeed, the Benedictine Monk Appiano, lived in sanctity between the 1700s and 1800s, was sent here in this region to organise the collection of salt for its monastery "“Ciel d’oro” in Pavia. Slowly pedal along the pathway in a sensory journey at the discovery of the surrounding natural environments. The colours and flavours of the flowers of hawthorns, blackthorns, elderberries, rose hips, wild sage and mint can give use astonishing emotions.
