The Deer Museum of Mesola

Castello Estense - Piazza S. Spirito - 44026 Mesola (FE)
Tel. + 39 339 1935943 Fax: + 39 0533 993358

In the evocative atmosphere of the Castle on the second floor there is the Woods and Deer Museum of Mesola.
The exhibitions show, with the help of maps, how the territory has changed over time; it also presents the main environmental features of the area, thanks to the elaboration of more recent scientific data with the supervision of the University of Ferrara.

The visitor will find here a collection of reproductions of the pages of the herbarium of Filippo De Pisis, a painter from Ferrara who -at the beginning of the 20th century- collected, classified and preserved specimens of the plants of the Mesola woods and surrounding areas, before donating them to the University of Padua where they are kept now. A section of the museum is dedicated to the Mesola Deer. This animal is absolutely peculiar for its genetics, aspect and behaviour. The itinerary retraces its presence in the history and culture of Ferrara with documents found in paleonthological sites, in prehistorical, Roman and Etruscan settlements, in Christian lithurgy and in the Renaissance traditions at the Estense Court of Ferrara.
This museum is a tribute to the territory and an invite to discover all the history, culture, traditions, nature and flavour hiding in it.

The museum, complete with a Naturalistic Lab and a Didactic Hall situated in the confining building is also an Emilia Romagna Region credited Environmental Education Centre.
